Adolescent Outpatient

COMTREA's Suburban office in Arnold and South office in Festus provide outpatient treatment and day treatment planning, referral, recovery planning, after-care, individual and group counseling for alcohol and other drug abusing adolescent and their families.

The Athena adolescent C-STAR program utilizes the Global Assessment of Individual Needs (GAIN-I) to assess the adolescent’s level of substance use. In addition, the information acquired at the time of assessment is used to develop an individualized treatment plan for the adolescent and her/his family addressing mental, physical, behavioral and spiritual needs. The outpatient and day treatment programs provide various counseling and educational services to assist adolescents and their families. The schedule of services allows adolescents flexibility to participate in their treatment program while continuing to address their daily responsibilities.

Professional substance abuse professionals work with the adolescents on various issues including the identification of triggers to using substances, physical effects of substances, emotional effects of substances, effective coping mechanisms, etc., through the use of individual and group therapy and group psycho-education. In addition, a professional family therapist is available to assist the adolescent and family in repairing relationships and building supports that will assist the adolescent in her/his recovery.

For adolescents in the day treatment program, educational services are provided to assist the adolescents in keeping up with their studies while in treatment. It is not uncommon that while in day treatment services, the educational component of the program may actually assist the adolescents in “catching up” on studies when they have fallen behind due to their use of substances.

Sometimes an adolescent may have difficulty with maintaining progress toward recovery while in the outpatient program. In instances like this, residential treatment may be recommended. Referral to the Athena C-STAR residential program may be facilitated by the outpatient staff if needed.

As an adolescent progresses through her/his treatment, sometimes additional services are identified that may be beneficial. When this happens, the adolescent’s Community Support Specialist will assist the adolescent and her/his family in obtaining these services. In addition, throughout treatment, the adolescent’s treatment team members work with the adolescent and her/his family on developing a transition plan including the development of support networks that will assist the adolescent in maintaining her/his sobriety upon completion of the Athena Adolescent Program.

Supports such as COMTREA’s School Liaison Program may be instrumental in assisting the adolescent in maintaining sobriety by providing access to a counseling professional for follow-up and support on-site at the adolescent’s school. The Athena Adolescent C-STAR Program’s Community Support Specialist will assure seamless transition to these vital services for the adolescent.
